CROWN POINT CELEBRATES THE AKRON HISTORY PROJECT'S 2010 "WOMEN OF THE YEAR"

Judy James and Sr. Mariellen Phelps, OP at the Woman of the Year Awards

Sister Mariellen Phelps, O.P., Crown Point’s Outreach Coordinator, was honored at the 2010 Women of the Year Awards Dinner “Writing Women Back into History” for the Women’s History Project of the Akron Area. The dinner hosted on March 3, 2010 at The Martin Center on The University of Akron campus recognized woman who had accomplished much and worked to improve the lives of others. For almost thirty years, the Women’s History Project of the Akron Area has been recognizing special women who have worked tirelessly to further the lives of others – especially women and girls.

Sr. Mariellen was recognized in the category of Faith by this program with a special mission to “Write Women Back into History”. Sr. Mariellen has been a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace congregation for over 60 years. During that time she has served God and her religious and greater communities with a dedication to justice and care of Earth. Her religious community recognized her special gifts as a teacher and leader in her career and she was sent to Colorado to serve as an elementary teacher and later as a principal of an elementary school. Throughout her life she has sought opportunities to teach others of the wonder of God’s creation which led her to support the growth and development of ecology centers such as Genesis Farm in New Jersey and Crown point Ecology Center in Bath. Upon returning to Ohio she continued her long-standing work for preservation of Earth as a member of the Eco-Justice Committee of the Dominican Alliance. Through this group she presents information on key environmental issues to the members of the congregation and general public. At Crown Point Ecology Center she serves as the Outreach Coordinator where she works with volunteer groups, provides informative tours of the center and hosts workshops on ecological and spiritual topics.

The Women’s History Project brings together women from different religious, racial, political and socio-economic backgrounds to celebrate our collective history. The program recognizes women whose contributions were for too long missing from history textbooks – women of previous generations who left their mark on society, as well as contemporary women who continue to raise the bar.

Judy James, Manager of the Special Collections Division of the Akron-Summit County Public Library was honored for her Innovation by the 2010 Women’s History Project. Judy has a 12-year relationship with Crown Point Ecology Center as a member of the board of directors, committee chair, active volunteer and supporter. She currently serves on the marketing committee, as a Table Captain for Taste of Earth 2010, and as a CSA shareholder.

Judy is credited with authoring a proposal to create the Special Collections Division of the Akron-Summit County Public Library when the new Main Library was being planned.
