Crown Point's Taste of Earth 2008
Celebrates 10th Anniversary

CROWN POINT ECOLOGY CENTER

The weather was perfect, conversation was sparkling, and the flowers were beautiful on Saturday evening, August 9 when Crown Point hosted its 10th anniversary Taste of Earth celebration! Guests were greeted by valet parkers and were offered a choice of a Signature Crown Point Martini or refreshing Rosemary Lemonade. The River City Jazz Duo had folks stepping lively as they wandered toward the Bank Barn to bid on Silent Auction items and sample tasty hors d’oeuvres.

At 6:30 Sr. Laura Wallace, Crown Point’s Master Gardener, rang a cow bell signaling dinner as the Jazz Duo struck up “When the Saints Go Marching In” and led the guests into the tent for dinner. The seductive warmth of high summer in Ohio was emphasized by a striking color scheme in the tent. Tables were covered in hot pink, orange and golden yellow clothes accented by napkins in alternating colors. Centerpieces featured sunflowers and fresh cut flowers from the Crown Point gardens.

Guests enjoyed the lovely dinner prepared by Vaccaro’s Trattoria featuring vegetables from Crown Point’s harvest. Organic wines and local beer were served along with Bloody Marys enhanced by Crown Point tomatoes. Kathy Johnson sang ballads and folk songs with guitar accompaniment during dinner.

Chris Norman, Crown Point’s new director, welcomed guests and served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Following dinner, auctioneer Dick Kiko launched the Oral Auction by auctioning a special dessert for one lucky table to be prepared table-side by Chef Michael Ferris of Vaccaro’s. Steve Hopp was the generous winning bidder and donated the dessert to a table of Sisters of St. Dominic. He also won the bid for Cathy and Jim Hackney’s dinner in their lovely Hudson Century Home.

Guests’ generous bidding on Oral Auction items helped achieve the evening’s financial goal. Scott Griffith, winner of the 50/50 Raffle, graciously donated his winnings back to Crown Point.

Chris Norman enjoyed his first Taste of Earth and noted, “What a beautiful evening to gather with our Crown Point friends and supporters. Special thanks to the 2008 TOE Sponsors, Tri-Chairs -- Susan Flowers, Cathy Hackney and Ellen Otto, committee members, Crown Point staff, volunteers and supportive guests who made this year’s TOE one of our finest!”
